The profession of podiatry has developed from its origins in chiropody to become a medical
speciality dealing with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the lower limb. Podiatry has
developed a broad scope of practice focusing on the use of scientific principles for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of a wide range of lower limb disorders.

A podiatrist can deal with a huge range of lower limb and foot disorders including:

• Biomechanical problems, related to the position of the foot and lower limb and its effect
  on hips, spine, pelvis.
• Soft tissue and sporting injuries such as plantar fascitis and Achilles tendon problems
• Chiropody related problems such as corns and toe nail problems

The podiatrist will start with an assessment of the problem and can prescribe and manufacture orthotics if required.
